Gespeaker (english version)

Gespeaker 0.6 in english

Gespeaker is a project realized with Python and PyGTK libraries which allows the system to speak and read a written text or loaded from an external file.

This is a nice interface for espeak system that will be automatically installed if not present.

Its use is fairly simple, just to enter the text to listen or load it from an external file using the Open button and press the Play button to listen.

It’s possible to change various parameters such as pitch, volume, speed reading and gap between a word and the next. Also speaking language and male or female voice can be chosen.

Gespeaker 0.6 MinimizedIt’s designed for multilingual environments, so that if you run on a system with Italian language the user interface will be shown in Italian, on a system with english language the user interface will be in english. The system is opened to various localizations, it’s just needed the corresponding language file.

The installation does not damages the system in any way  neither it installs unnecessary dependencies. It’s fully compatible with Gnome, XFCE and LXDE environment on either Ubuntu or Debian, both 32 and 64 bit.

Gespeaker 0.6 PreferencesSince version 0.5 the system will be able to record the audio track in WAV format, as well it’s possibile save the user preferences.

Gespeaker 0.6 Mbrola voicesImportant news: since version 0.6 is allowed the use of the mbrola voices for more realistic speech experience. Please look at the new version 0.6 page (italian only sorry).

Please help me with suggestions to enhance Gespeaker or to translate it in other languages. 🙂

Package is available from the Ubuntu Trucchi repository or in the project hosted in Google Code. Download of the latest available version is recommended.

    Muflone :
version 0.8 will not be released soon because it will present a lot of changes as well support for external applications, firefox plugins, maybe openoffice’s.
it still requires a lot of work to make it fully usable by users.
if you want you can patch the 0.7 release to use the word gap to 0, it will requires to edit just a single line.
if you’re insterested in please tell me and I’ll show how to fix it.

Yes please tell me how to fix this. Is there a configuration file to edit?

      surely!
I suppose you’re using the ubuntu/debian version from the deb package.

just edit the GUI with a text editor like
      gksudo gedit /usr/share/gespeaker/data/ui/gespeaker.glade
search the text hscDelay (~ line 584) then change the adjustment line from
      10 5 100 1 10 0 to 10 0 100 1 10 0

      save, exit and restart gespeaker.

      please tell me you succeed.

Hi! Perhaps a suggestion for a new text-to-speech project for linux users who need a better sounding and more natural voice. Cepstral produces linux voices $29.90 per voice and the download provides Swift API. Like espeak, it has a command utility which looks similiar to espeak. More info on commandline stuff at

    https://www.cepstral.com/cgi-bin/support?page=faq&type=i386-linux

Would it then be a good idea to build a user interface for Cepstral’s Swift engine just like Gespeaker does for espeak? Maybe make your project donationware too.

      Hi Erwin

the new gespeaker 0.8 will introduce a lot of enhancements like external program interface via dbus api useful to build support for external apps (so firefox/openoffice/amsn/xchat/whateveryouwant will talk with gespeaker).
This is almost mature, I’m actually writing documentation for whoever wants to write a new interface for programs you want to make talk. I’ll release it very soon with interface for most common applications.

Moreover I’m actually studying the best way to introduce the use of various plugins (espeak/mbrola/festival/festvox/festcat/swift/ktts/everythingelse sinthetizer plugins, alsa/pulse audio plugins, plugins for other things).
That’s actually just a concept, not yet ready to be coded. My free time is very little ATM.

For this reason I’ll ask you to wait for the next version 0.8 or the following 0.9, I’ll support every synthetizer I can introduce.
      thank you for you suggest

Where do I go to download voices?

    • 28 ottobre 2011 alle 16:12

      it depends on your distribution.
debian, ubuntu and other debian based distributions have the voices in the repositories.
Arch Linux have them in the aur repository.
